Sarasohn & Company –  Public Adjusters

561-368-5000

For four generations, the name Sarasohn has been synonymous with the highest levels of integrity and expertise in the field of insurance adjusting.

Emmanuel Sarasohn founded his public adjusting business in 1924 in Newark, NJ.  His sons, Ira and Roy, grew up in the family business and came on board full time after college and the army.

In 1951, Ira Sarasohn was one of the founding members of the National Association of Public Insurance Adjusters. Ira and Roy would both later serve as president of that esteemed organization.

Ira J. Sarasohn took over the helm of Sarasohn & Company  after his father’s passing. In 1970, Stephen Sarasohn joined the firm in NJ, but he settled in Florida a few years later. In 1985, both Ira and Stephen helped found the Florida Association of Public Insurance Adjusters. After 72 years of public adjusting, Ira J. Sarasohn passed away in 2006 with many active files on his desk. In 2018, Bernard Sarasohn joined the firm as a licensed public adjuster.

Stephen Sarasohn is now CEO of Sarasohn & Company and he maintains the same high standards as his predecessors.  Sarasohn & Company, Inc. is based in Boca Raton, FL but is licensed to handle claims in other states as well.

Building Claims

In order to properly adjust any claim for damage to a structure, it is important to prepare a detailed repair estimate.  Sarasohn & Company will do that on your behalf.  Whenever necessary, we will employ the services of architects, engineers, contractors and other independent experts at no additional cost to you.

Full consideration is given to the provisions of your policy, as well as applicable statutes and case law, so as to maximize the recovery. This includes consideration of depreciation, coinsurance, code upgrades, deductibles and any other factors important to a successful adjustment.  Sarasohn & Company is also equipped to provide project management for the reconstruction process.  Project management is a field used in large construction projects to coordinate the various aspects of the repairs. This service is provided at no additional cost.

Personal Property Losses

All insurance policies require the submission of a complete inventory of both the damaged and undamaged personal property.  This includes machinery, trade fixtures, appliances, merchandise inventory, household furnishings, clothing and all other movable property insured under the policy.  This coverage also covers improvements and betterments on tenants’ policies, which can be treated several ways for claims purposes.

Sarasohn & Company has on its staff, experienced personnel who are capable of filling these requirements.   In addition to listing the property involved, our experts will calculate the replacement cost and actual cash value of each item as well as the repair cost when appropriate.  We will determine salvage value, if any, and help arrange for protection of the property from further damage, as required by the policy.  Our services can be helpful in documenting your tax loss, if any.

Loss of Income Claims

One of the most complex aspects of your claim involves calculating the loss of income you will suffer as a direct result of damage to real or personal property.  Sarasohn’s long term experience has helped to develop a team of forensic accountants who have proven to be outstanding in their ability to adjust claims in a way most favorable to the policyholder.  The services of CPA’s and tax attorneys are engaged when necessary, at no additional cost to you.

One of the questions that usually arise in a loss of income claim involves the continuation of payroll during the period of restoration.  It is extremely important that a method be established as soon as possible after the loss, to resolve this aspect of the claim.  Sarasohn & Company, with its years of experience will assist you with these important decisions.  Extra expense coverage can be used creatively to make up for insufficient property coverage, should that scenario exist.

Do you have a residential or commercial property in Florida, Georgia, Texas, North Carolina or South Carolina? The public adjusters at Sarasohn & Company are experts at maximizing your insurance claim recovery. We don’t get paid unless you do!

Most states license all insurance adjusters, whether they work for an insurance company or for the public. Adjusters working for the insurance companies are obligated to treat all claimants fairly and impartially. However, they are paid by the insurance companies for their efforts. The state recognizes that you, the policyholder, are entitled to equal representation and you may retain the services of an expert adjuster to assist in the claim process.  Sarasohn & Company can assist in preparing your claim, guiding you through the claim process and helping to achieve the most favorable settlement. In addition to numerous state licenses, Stephen Sarasohn has held the nationally recognized designation of Senior Professional Public Adjuster since 1988.

If you’re a homeowner, water is one of the biggest threats to your house and personal belongings. Your house has an intricate network of plumbing and a burst pipe could lead to both major headaches and expensive repair bills. Not to mention other water problems, like a heavy storm, a deep freeze or even a busted hose on a dishwasher.

It seems your home is always moments away from getting soaked.
Water damage (including damage from freezing) is one of the most common and most costly types of homeowners insurance claims. Every year, about one in 50 homeowners will file a water damage or freezing claim, accounting for almost 24% of all homeowners insurance claims, according to the Insurance Information Institute. The average cost of a water damage or freezing claim is about $10,900.
One of the best ways to protect a home from water damage is by taking some preventative measures. Keeping up with routine maintenance and making prompt repairs is key.
Remember, homeowners insurance covers water damage that is “sudden and accidental” but not gradual problems or maintenance issues. If you have a problem like a leaky faucet, it’s best to take care of it as soon as possible.
Here are other steps you can take:
Drain water heaters twice a year to help prevent sediment buildup.
• Install smart water leak detectors that will send an alert to your phone or email. (Some detectors can
automatically shut off the water to prevent damage). In a LexisNexis study of 2,306 U.S. homes that installed a water leak detector had water-related claims go down by 96% compared to the two years prior to installation.
• Inspect hoses going to and from washing machines, dishwashers, water heaters and refrigerators. Repair or replace any damaged hoses if necessary.
• Inspect your roof and make any necessary repairs, such as replacing missing, rotten or damaged shingles. It’s also a good idea to clean out your roof gutters. Clogged gutters can overflow and allow water to pool near a home’s foundation, which could seep into your basement.
• Prevent frozen pipes if you live in an area that has extreme cold temperatures. Keep your heat set to at least 50 degrees and consider other precautions, like wrapping pipes with insulation.

    Maus Law Firm

    954-784-6310

Mr. Maus is a Florida native practicing law in South Florida since 1993. He currently limits his practice to the areas of insurance related claims – personal injury and homeowner property damage claims and commercial litigation. Mr. Maus has tried over 60 jury trials to verdict and has litigated claims throughout Florida.

Delays and Partial Payouts — Challenging the Patience of Florida Policyholders

Insurers often engage in strategies meant to challenge the patience of the policyholder and thereby force the policyholder to accept a lower payout, or to simply resign themselves to no payout.  For example, an insurer may excessively delay the processing of the claim, arguing that the delays are due to ongoing investigation of the damage.  By doing so, they hope that you — under pressure to fix the roof and no doubt overwhelmed by the proceedings— will simply move forward without waiting for the insurer and potentially give up on dealing with the hassle they created.

Partial payouts — in which the policyholder is offered an inadequate sum, but a sum nonetheless — are another way in which insurers try to goad policyholders into accepting less than what they’re owed under the policy at issue.

It’s worth noting that Florida law may entitle policyholders to bring an independent “bad faith” action against the insurer (which could even lead to punitive damages) if the insurer failed to investigate and pay the claim in a timely manner, or failed to evaluate the claim fairly under the circumstances. Simply put, if there was no valid justification for the denial, then our Fort Lauderdale roof damage attorneys may be able to sue and recover damages pursuant to a bad faith claim.

Coverage Exclusion as the Basis for Denial

In homeowner’s insurance policies, payouts for roof damage may be limited due to coverage exclusions.

For example, a roof damage claim may be covered if it is caused by a thunderstorm, but not if it is caused by a hurricane.

Such strict categorization for roof damage coverage often leads to a dispute, particularly if the event leading up to the roof damage at-issue is somewhat muddled — if your roof is damaged in a hurricane (which is covered by the policy), the insurer might claim that it was not actually the wind force of the hurricane itself, but a falling tree that caused the roof damage.  You can successfully counter this argument by showing how the hurricane directly caused the tree to fall on your roof.

Here at Maus Law Firm, our South Florida property damage attorneys have decades of experience representing the interests of policyholders whose real estate property has been harmed, whether due to a storm, fire, or some other unexpected event — including those which cause damage to the roof structure.

We understand the unique challenges that are faced by policyholders who are attempting to secure an adequate payout through submitting a roof damage claim, and are standing by to assist such policyholders in pursuing litigation against their insurers.

‘Tis the season to be jolly, but safety should always come first! 🚒 Here are some Christmas tree fire safety tips to keep your holiday celebrations worry-free:

💦 Keep it Hydrated: Water your tree daily to prevent it from drying out and becoming a fire hazard.

🕯️Placement Matters: Position your tree away from heat or open-flame sources, like candles, heaters and fireplaces. We know, there are not many fireplaces in South Florida, but just in case 😉.

💡Lights Check: Inspect your holiday lights for any frayed wires or damaged bulbs before decorating.

🔌Unplug at Night: Remember to turn off tree lights before heading to bed or leaving home.

🎄Quality Ornaments: Use non-flammable or flame-resistant decorations to minimize risks.

🧯Fire Extinguisher Ready: Have a fire extinguisher nearby, just in case.

We hope you follow these tips for a safe holiday season! While we are hopeful that you won’t experience any fire damage, remember that we are here for you, and we can manage ANY damage! 1-877-224-2532.

Don’t let a natural disaster catch your community off guard! Take charge and be prepared!

Don’t let a natural disaster catch your community off guard! Take charge and be prepared!

The coastal Northeast is experiencing a concerning trend of heating at a faster rate compared to other regions in North America. Researchers have identified a strong correlation between the accelerated warming and the rapidly increasing temperatures in the North Atlantic Ocean and increasing storm intensity. Natural disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes and coastal flooding can strike at any moment, leaving communities devastated and in need of immediate assistance. It is crucial for communities to be prepared in order to minimize the impact of these disasters and ensure the safety of their residents.

Preparing your community for a natural disaster is crucial to minimize damage, save lives, and facilitate a swift recovery. Here are a few steps to assist with your preparation:

    Assessment and Planning:

    • Identify the types of natural disasters that are common in your area, such as earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, wildfires, or tornadoes.
    • Conduct a thorough risk assessment to understand the potential impact of these disasters on infrastructure, buildings, and residents.
    • Collaborate with professionals to create a comprehensive disaster preparedness plan.
    • Make sure that the community has backed up records of their site plans, architectural and structural drawings, as this can greatly assist in the post disaster assessment and recovery process.

Initial building evaluation performed based on the severity of the storm/event:

    • The degree of safety & habitability of the subject building is not always obvious. If there is any doubt or question that there may be structural or building envelope damage to a building, call you Professional Engineer or Architect and have an evaluation performed.
    • In some instances, you may be required by your local municipality to have your professional assist with stabilizing the structure before parties can enter the structure to collect personal belonging that may remain.

    Communication and Engagement:

    • Establish a reliable communication system to disseminate information before, during, and after a disaster. This can include email, social media, or text alerts.
    • Designate community leaders or volunteers responsible for communicating updates and instructions.

    Contact Insurance:

    • It can take a while to get adjusters to scene following an event. Be sure to take before, during and after photos of any damage that occurred.

    Post-Disaster Recovery:

    • Establish a recovery plan that includes damage assessment, debris removal, and restoration of essential services.
    • Plans and specifications may be required to repair or reconstruct the building, depending on severity.
    • Code requirements can impact the work based on if it is classified as repair vs reconstruction. This needs to be carefully reviewed and considered as insurance carriers may try to exclude some of the necessary work, so the Architect or Engineer needs to be well versed on preparing plans for this type of work.

Remember, disaster preparedness is an ongoing effort. Regularly review and update your plans based on new information, changing community demographics, and emerging technologies. By taking proactive steps, you can help your community minimize the impact of natural disasters and ensure a more resilient future.

Contact our team for more information how to be proactive!

Mold testing and remediation are essential because they provide a comprehensive approach to identifying and eliminating mold at its source

Mold testing and remediation are essential because they provide a comprehensive approach to identifying and eliminating mold at its source

Mold testing and remediation are essential because they provide a comprehensive approach to identifying and eliminating mold at its source, preventing recurrence, and ensuring a safe, healthy environment.

Here’s why each step is critical:

Identifying the Extent of the Problem with Mold Testing

    • Accurate Detection: Mold often grows in hidden places like wall cavities, ceilings, or HVAC systems. Testing helps identify mold’s presence, type, and spread, which might not be visible.

    • Targeted Remediation: Knowing the mold’s location and type informs a tailored approach to remediation, ensuring the complete removal of all affected areas rather than just visible mold patches.

    • Health Risk Assessment: Testing can reveal the concentration of airborne spores, which is vital for assessing the potential health risks, especially in buildings with sensitive occupants.

Ensuring Effective Removal and Prevention with Remediation

    • Eliminates Mold at the Source: Remediation not only removes visible mold but also addresses underlying issues like water leaks and humidity, which are primary causes of mold growth.

    • Prevents Future Growth: Proper remediation includes moisture control and preventive measures, which significantly reduce the chances of mold returning.

    • Protects Building Integrity: Mold can weaken structural elements over time, compromising walls, ceilings, and insulation. Remediation stops the damage, preserving the property’s safety and value.

    3. Ensuring Health and Safety

    • Reduces Health Risks: Mold can cause respiratory issues, allergies, and other health problems. Testing and remediation minimize these risks by improving indoor air quality and reducing exposure to allergens and toxins.

    • Compliance with Safety Standards: For commercial or residential buildings, remediation may be necessary to comply with health codes and regulations, particularly in environments with vulnerable populations.

Testing and remediation work together to thoroughly address the mold problem, protect the building structure, and maintain a safe, healthy living or working environment.

To schedule a mold inspection, reach out to Servtec Restoration. We can assess your property for mold, identify affected areas, and recommend next steps for remediation if needed.

Early detection and professional guidance are key to ensuring a safe and mold-free environment.

Here’s an overview of the potential risks associated with ignoring water damage: by SERVTEC Restoration

Here’s an overview of the potential risks associated with ignoring water damage: by SERVTEC Restoration

Here’s an overview of the potential risks associated with ignoring water damage:

    Structural Integrity

    • Foundation Weakening: Water can erode the foundation of a building, causing cracks and instability. Over time, this can lead to significant structural damage, including shifting or settling of the structure.
    • Wood Rot: Prolonged exposure to moisture causes wooden structures like beams, joists, and studs to rot. This can compromise the building’s stability, leading to sagging floors, walls, and potentially collapse.

    • Metal Corrosion: Metal components such as nails, screws, and steel beams can rust when exposed to moisture, weakening the overall structural integrity.

    Mold Growth

    • Health Hazards: Mold spores can cause respiratory issues, allergic reactions, and other health problems, particularly in individuals with asthma or weakened immune systems.
  • Widespread Contamination: If water damage is not addressed promptly, mold can spread throughout the building, making remediation more complex and expensive.

  • Electrical Risks

    • Electrical System Damage: Water can seep into electrical systems, corroding wiring and causing short circuits, which pose a fire hazard.
  • Increased Risk of Electrocution: Damaged electrical systems increase the risk of electrocution, especially in areas with standing water.

  • Decreased Property Value

    • Lower Resale Value: A property with untreated water damage is likely to lose value due to the potential for hidden damage and the cost of repairs. Prospective buyers may be deterred by the need for extensive remediation.
  • Insurance Issues: Untreated water damage can complicate insurance claims and lead to higher premiums, as insurers may view the property as a higher risk.

  • Air Quality Issues

    • Musty Odors: Stagnant water and mold growth can create musty odors that are difficult to eliminate, affecting the indoor air quality and comfort.
  • Increased Humidity: Water damage can lead to higher indoor humidity levels, which can exacerbate mold growth and contribute to further deterioration of building materials.

  • Long-Term Repair Cost

    • Escalating Costs: The longer water damage is left untreated, the more extensive and expensive repairs will become. Early intervention is critical to minimizing repair costs and preventing further damage.
  • Comprehensive Remediation: Addressing untreated water damage may require a full-scale remediation effort, including mold removal, structural repairs, and electrical system replacement.

  • In conclusion, immediate action is essential to mitigate these risks and protect both the building and its occupants. Regular inspections and prompt repair of any water intrusion are key to preventing long-term damage
