ARE WE TOO COMPLACENT ABOUT HURRICANE PREPARATION?

  1. Prepare a ready-to-go “Survival Kit,” in case you must evacuate, containing:
  • Cash and credit cards
  • Four-week supply of medications
  • Written prescriptions for refills
  • Nonperishable foods (groceries)
  • Non-electric (manual) can opener
  • Bottled water (small, easy-to-carry bottles, five-to-seven gallons per person)
  • Paper goods (plates, cups, towels, napkins, toilet paper, tissues)
  • Plastic utensils (forks, knives, spoons)
  • Plastic trash bags
  • Pillows, blankets, sleeping bag, or air mattress (blow up air mattress if necessary)
  • Flashlight and batteries; extra batteries!
  • Portable cooler, portable digital tv and/or battery-operated radio
  • Cellphone and portable charger
  • Camera (plus film, batteries, memory capacity, etc., if you use an older cellphone that doesn’t have one.)
  • Extra clothing and shoes
  • Eyeglasses
  • Duct tape and heavy duty extension cords
  • Insect repellent
  • First Aid kit
  • Books, quiet games, cards, toys for children if appropriate
