SHOULD I USE A PUBLIC ADJUSTER?

by Steven Sarasohon of Sarasohn & Company Public Adjusters

Most states license all insurance adjusters, whether they work for an insurance company or for the public. Adjusters working for the insurance companies are obligated to treat all claimants fairly and impartially. However, they are paid by the insurance companies for their efforts. The state recognizes that you, the policyholder, are entitled to representation and you may retain the services of a licensed public adjuster to assist in the claim process. Sarasohn & Company, founded in 1924, is a fourth-generation public adjusting company based in Boca Raton, FL.  As such, we can provide unparalleled expertise to get you the best possible settlement.

Our president, Stephen Sarasohn SPPA, is the third generation in his family’s business. His son, Bernard, joined the firm several years ago and is following in his footsteps. Stephen has been a public adjuster for 51 years and has held the professional designation Senior Professional Public Adjuster since it was first created in 1987. Stephen’s father, Ira Sarasohn SPPA, was one of the founding members of the National Association of Public Insurance Adjusters. Both Stephen and Ira were founding members of the Florida Association of Public Insurance Adjusters.

Property owners can certainly try to prepare and adjust their insurance claims themselves. However, as with most things in life, a great deal of benefit can be realized by hiring an expert to assist with a difficult and complex task. No public adjuster in Florida has as much experience as Stephen Sarasohn. Stephen has been certified as an instructor by the Florida Department of Financial Services and has taught insurance courses to the other public adjusters for their continuing education requirements. Sarasohn & Company has adjusted claims ranging from burglaries to plumbing leaks, to fires, to hurricanes, to airplanes crashing into buildings. The valuable experience we’ve gained, in our 98 years, benefits every client. We’ve adjusted a great many claims in excess of a million dollars, some of them in the tens of millions.

Not every professional is the same. When you need the assistance of an expert, you should hire the best expert. Contrary to another article on this site, damage caused by your negligence is not excluded.

While it would be wonderful if no one ever suffered damage to their property, it would be unrealistic to expect such good fortune. That’s why we all buy insurance. If you make a claim, the insurance company will have experts to represent their interests and you’d be well advised to do the same. 5 Key Advantages of Hiring a Public Insurance Adjuster

by Joseph Patrick Connelly
Public Adjuster, Association Adjusting

Have you suffered damage to your home? Do you need help understanding and adjusting your insurance claim? A public insurance adjuster can help you obtain the most money possible for the damage done to your home. Further, as a homeowner, under large amounts of stress, you may not have the knowledge, expertise, time, or even the energy to handle such a complex claim.

Here are just a few advantages of hiring a public insurance adjuster:

  1. Helps You Understand Your Policy
Insurance policies are complex documents that can be hard to interpret if you’re not an expert. A public insurance adjuster can offer the expertise needed to decipher the language of the insurance policy. They can help you understand what options you have in order to make a proper claim under your insurance contract. Public adjusters will provide these services for a normal contingency fee. A public adjuster uses their experience and skill set to secure a proper claim settlement to conduct repairs as a result of the claim event. Bringing your property back to ‘like, kind, quality.”
  2. Saves You Time
A public adjuster will organize and manage your claim for you, whether it’s a claim for a flood, fire, smoke, wind and hurricane damage, or other disasters that can damage your home. This way, you’ll spend less time dealing with claims issues and more time handling other priorities you have as a homeowner. Indeed, you can get on with your daily life and leave the insurance adjusting to a professional.
  3. Resolves Your Claim Faster
Handling an insurance claim yourself can come with many complications. Corresponding with your insurance company and gathering the necessary paperwork to resolve your claim can be quite time-consuming and may interfere with your other commitments. Because public adjusters possess the knowledge and expertise to understand insurance claims, are experienced in processing necessary paperwork, and are skilled at using the proper language to communicate with your insurance carrier, your insurance claim could be processed faster.
  4. Protect Your Rights as a Policyholder
Unlike company insurance adjusters who work for large companies, public insurance adjusters work on behalf of you, the policyholder. They have no relationship with the insurance company. The only time a public insurance adjuster corresponds with the insurance company is when it’s regarding the policyholder’s insurance claim. Your public adjuster will handle the necessary meetings, e-mails, phone calls, and paper documents involved with your claim. Public adjusters help clients negotiate appropriate settlements with their insurer. Thus, if your claim is denied, a public adjuster understands your insurance company’s expectations and could use their skillset if you need to take a more aggressive approach to obtain appropriate claim settlements.
  5. Ensures Fair Value for Your Claim
The Office of Program and Policy Analysis & Government Accountability (OPAGGA) conducted a study in the state of Florida, which showed that public adjusters negotiate up to a 747% larger settlement (before removing the contingency payment) from insurance companies for commercial business and homeowner insurance property loss claims than the insurance company was planning to pay out. This shows how important it is for homeowners to consult with a public insurance adjuster, as they can help them receive as much as possible from their insurance claim.

You have until September 10, 2020 to make a claim for damages that were the result of Hurricane Irma.

You have until September 10, 2020 to make a claim for damages that were the result of Hurricane Irma.

If you have not properly addressed possible Hurricane Irma damage to your property – the time to do so is now.
Hurricane Irma first made landfall in Cudjoe Key, FL on September 10, 2017, which means you have until September 10, 2020 to make a claim for damages that were the result of Hurricane Irma.
September 10, 2020 is also the deadline to re-open or supplement a claim that has already been made for damages that occurred as a result of Hurricane Irma.
If you are unsure if your property sustained damage as a result of Hurricane Irma you should ask for an inspection by a qualified contractor, estimator or building inspector to assess whether hurricane-force winds damaged or compromised the roofing system and building envelope. Many companies offer this initial inspection free of charge. Given the complexities of a large loss claim, consider consulting with an attorney experienced in handling commercial insurance claims for condominiums and homeowners associations.
The deadline is fast approaching, so time is of the essence to file your hurricane claim. If you miss the deadline, you will be forever barred from initiating a hurricane Irma claim in the future.
We are available to assist you and connect you with top professionals in the industry to accurately evaluate hurricane damage and submit an insurance claim the right way – today.

Make A Plan – Plan Ahead for Disasters

https://www.fema.gov/mobile-app

Floods are the most common natural disaster in the United States.  As we are approaching Hurricane Season we want you to be safe!

Know what disasters and hazards could affect your area, how to get emergency alerts, and where you would go if you and your family need to evacuate. Check out the related links to learn what to do before, during and after each type of emergency.

Make a plan today. Your family may not be together if a disaster strikes, so it is important to know which types of disasters could affect your area.  Know how you’ll contact one another and reconnect if separated. Establish a family meeting place that’s familiar and easy to find.

Step 1: Put together a plan by discussing these 4 questions with your family, friends, or household to start your emergency plan.

  1. How will I receive emergency alerts and warnings?
  2. What is my shelter plan?
  3. What is my evacuation route?
  4. What is my family/household communication plan?

Step 2:  Consider specific needs in your household.

As you prepare your plan tailor your plans and supplies to your specific daily living needs and responsibilities. Discuss your needs and responsibilities and how people in the network can assist each other with communication, care of children, business, pets, or specific needs like the operation of durable medical equipment. Create your own personal network for specific areas where you need assistance.  Keep in mind some these factors when developing your plan:

  • Different ages of members within your household
  • Responsibilities for assisting others
  • Locations frequented
  • Dietary needs
  • Medical needs including prescriptions and equipment
  • Disabilities or access and functional needs including devices and equipment
  • Languages spoken
  • Cultural and religious considerations
  • Pets or service animals
  • Households with school-aged children

Step 3: Fill out a Family Emergency Plan

Download and fill out a family emergency plan or use them as a guide to create your own.
